The Parallel String Band has been instrumental in maintaining the flavor of live music at contra dances in Southern New England. A traditional New England Contra Dance is a direct descendant of the English country dancing and dates back at least four centuries. Contras and squares came to North America with the English settlers and were enjoyed by all social classes throughout the colonial period. Today, contra dancing is alive and well! There are dances held most weekends throughout the year. Sandol Astrausky leads the band with her dynamic rhythm style that makes the southern mountain tunes unforgettable!
